You wanted it bad.
You really meant it this time.
You imagine your jiu jitsu, only 5kg lighter. You can feel the speed. You know you'd revel in the gas. You'd look great. You'd feel awesome.
And there you were, like the warrior that you are. Determined and oh so motivated to finally achieve what you want.
Your plan was to go to the gym 3 times per week. Eat fewer carbs. Do something different to change the course.
The goal was set. You started well. Then it got a little tough.
By now, it’s almost over.
Yet again, failure is nigh.
Change is complex.
Building skills is hard work.
Doing things differently is challenging.
The process of change is a slow, gradual journey, and it is filled with peaks, and troughs. Sometimes you’re killing it, and other times you’d like to hang your head in shame.
Life without change is easier.
It looks like the path of least resistance. So you feel compelled to take it.
Are you a failure? No.
Do you lack willpower? Maybe sometimes. But you're also not a robot.
For some this means a drink or five, or ten. Others prefer the joys of a family sized Cadbury’s Roast Almond chocolate.
Maybe they both sound good. On the couch. While skipping that gym session.
I get it. We all have our soft spots.
Here’s the thing: you’re not alone.
I’ve been through the cycle countless times. I’m still in it myself. Everyone is.
You want to know why?
It’s because we’re all human.
We’re different humans, but we’re humans nevertheless.
We all have a brain that thinks, and a heart that beats.
And we all have thoughts, and feelings, and strengths, and struggles.
And I've learned through experience that to force change is to ensure that it will not happen. The intentions can be good. You’re desperate for the result. You were willing to be as strict as ever.
And still, if the circumstances around you aren't in a cohesive unit, cracks will eventually form. They will develop into gaping holes. From there the fall is long, and far, and predictable.
This is why most attempts at changing don’t work.
Willpower has limits.
Relying on willpower is like buying a large popcorn at the movies and only wanting to eat a quarter of it. You may laugh. You may cry. One thing for sure is that you will probably eat more.
Maybe you're not weak willed. Perhaps you're just setting yourself up to fail.
The environment is much easier to control.
What if you used just a little of that willpower in the buying stage, and chose the small popcorn at the desk instead? Maybe you even thought about that exact moment in advance. You were ready.
That's because when you pay attention to the environment, you can mould the situations that would usually force you to kick that willpower into gear.
Focus on what is around you.
Some willpower dispersed in the right conditions could be the perfect recipe for success. Yet the sole reliance on willpower and discipline to accomplish big, sweeping changes is doomed to failure.
You need to look around yourself and assess:
- Your daily routine
- What tools you have available to you
- The people you interact with
- The environment and everything around you.
This isn't easy. And nothing worth doing is.
You're great. You know it. I do too.
