3 Surprising Ways Jiu Jitsu Will Transform Your Life (Beyond the Belts and Armbars)

May 27, 2025/by John Smallios

Jiu jitsu. The art of folding people in pyjamas. The complete science of self-defence. And arguably the most fun, life-changing lifestyle martial art known to humanity.

It is also the cause of an overwhelming amount of washing and a passion that quietly, then completely, takes over your life and turns you into a full-blown grappling maniac.

People come to jiu jitsu for all sorts of reasons: fitness, self-defence, confidence, boredom, curiosity, or maybe because Joe Rogan wouldn’t stop talking about it. But here is the thing nobody tells you at sign-up:

The reason you start jiu jitsu is rarely the reason you stay.

After almost 20 years on the mats, here are three of the most unexpected and genuinely profound ways jiu jitsu makes your life better. Not just your guard. Your whole life.

1. Equanimity: You Stop Losing Your Cool (And It Changes Everything)

Early adult me was a little hot-headed. I treated most of life’s problems like nails, and I had a hammer of frustration ready to swing at all times. Patience? Not much. Self-control? Even less.

Then came the mats.

Jiu jitsu teaches you to ride the wave. You cannot muscle your way out of every bad position. You have to feel the push and pull, sense when to resist and when to yield, and understand that sometimes the strongest thing you can do is soften. That lesson does not stay on the mat. It seeps into every corner of your life.

Someone cuts you off in traffic? You smile and keep cruising.

Your toddler tests every boundary you have? You breathe instead of boil.

Your difficult colleague sends that passive-aggressive email? You respond with clarity instead of heat.

As the Tao Te Ching wisely notes: “That which offers no resistance, overcomes the hardest substances.”

In jiu jitsu, you are not offering no resistance. You are learning when to resist and when to let it pass. That awareness of energy, yours and everyone else’s, is one of the most valuable tools you will ever develop. It saves arguments, preserves relationships, and quietly makes you a far better human to be around.

2. Real Confidence: The Kind That Lets You Speak Up When It Counts

Jiu jitsu is the ultimate pressure cooker. You get choked, squeezed, squashed, and thrown. You face discomfort daily and you learn, over and over again, to stay calm inside it.

And on the other side of that discomfort? Something genuinely precious.

Calm under pressure. In real life.

Conflict, whether physical, emotional, or social, stops feeling so threatening. That nervous flutter you used to feel when confrontation was on the horizon? It shifts. From fear to focus. Because you have already experienced real pressure and come out the other side. You know what you are made of.

That does not mean you turn into someone who looks for fights. Quite the opposite.

But it does mean:

  • You can stand your ground with a difficult boss, calmly and clearly.
  • You can speak up when someone is being mistreated, even when it would be easier to look away.
  • You can tell the person who just skipped the queue exactly where the line starts, and smile while you do it.
  • You stop letting small moments of cowardice accumulate into something you regret.

Here is the truth that jiu jitsu teaches you over time: sometimes it is not what you did that haunts you. It is what you did not do. Jiu jitsu gives you the courage to do and say what actually needs doing and saying, in the moments that matter most.

3. Your People: A Social Circle That Genuinely Keeps You Sane

Before jiu jitsu, my social life looked like most people’s: mates from school, late nights at the pub, laughs and mischief at the usual spots. Great times. Genuinely.

But when training became a real part of my life, something shifted. The hours that once lived on bar stools moved to the mats instead.

And that is where I found my tribe.

A bunch of weird, wonderful people who showed up in pyjamas, night after night, to get better. We laughed, we rolled, we talked UFC for hours, and somewhere between the triangles and the takedowns, we built friendships that no group chat could ever replicate.

These days, life is full in the best and busiest way: work, kids, responsibilities that come from nowhere and stay forever. Catching up with old friends takes serious scheduling. But because of jiu jitsu, I get to train, grow, learn, and genuinely hang out with a room full of legends every single week. We move our bodies, sharpen our minds, learn skills that could one day matter, and we do it all alongside some of the most humble, grounded, and genuinely happy people you will ever meet.

And the science agrees.

A landmark 75-year Harvard study found that the quality of your relationships is the single greatest predictor of a long, healthy, fulfilling life. Not wealth. Not status. Not achievements.

Relationships.

Jiu jitsu just happens to be one of the most reliable ways to build them.

So There It Is: Three Reasons Jiu Jitsu Makes You a Better Human

Equanimity. Confidence. Community.

None of these show up on the syllabus. Nobody mentions them at your first class. But ask anyone who has been training for a few years and they will tell you: the mats change you in ways you never saw coming.

Agree? Disagree? Got your own reason for sticking around?

Drop a comment below or share this with someone who thinks jiu jitsu is just about getting choked out. It is time they knew what is really happening on the other side of all that discomfort.

See you on the mats.
