8 Luxuries of Training Jiu Jitsu

March 24, 2026/by John Smallios

Most people think about jiu jitsu in terms of what you learn – the sweeps, the submissions, the strategies. And yeah, all of that’s real. But the longer you’re on the mats, the more you notice the other stuff. The quiet upgrades to your life that nobody puts on the curriculum. The things you only really appreciate once you have them. Here are eight of them.

01. You Can Touch Your Toes Without a Second Thought

Time on the mats teaches you how to actually use your body. Better mechanics. More efficient effort. Less strain getting in and out of things. That’s the quiet foundation underneath strength, flexibility, mobility – all of it.

You’re not stretching because your physio told you to. You’re moving well because you’ve spent hundreds of hours learning your own machine from the inside out. That kind of body literacy is genuinely rare, and once you have it, you don’t think twice about it – which is exactly what makes it a luxury.

2. You Know How to Use Your Hips – and That Changes Everything

What’s difficult today becomes easy tomorrow when you understand the mechanics behind it. In jiu jitsu, almost everything flows from the hips. Learn to drive with them, control them, free them at the right moment – and suddenly your game multiplies. What looked like a wall becomes a door.

“When you build effectiveness and efficiency from the core, you find new ways and reach new heights.”

This principle carries off the mats too. Build from centre outward, and everything else follows.

3. People Know You by First Name

There’s something about a room full of people who chose to be there, who push themselves, who respect the process. It fills up with legends – people who think good thoughts and do wholesome things with their time. The mats attract a certain type.

And those people become your people. The ones you train with in the early mornings or late evenings, who know your game, who’ve felt your pressure and helped you sharpen it. Mates, in the truest sense. In a world that can feel increasingly disconnected, that kind of real-world community is quietly rare.

4. You Always Have Something to Study, Watch, and Think About

It started as a hobby. Then it became something you negotiate your whole week around. The academy pulls you in to explore and test and fine-tune and test again – and you find yourself watching instructionals when you should be sleeping and thinking about that guard pass when you definitely shouldn’t be.

It’s in your feeds. It’s what you share with your mates. It gives you that rare thing: a pursuit that’s genuinely alive for you. What fantastic problems to have.

5. Cardio Has Never Been This Good or Fun

Sure, three rounds on the Airdyne does the job. But have you ever gone five rounds of hard sparring with people who are actively trying to submit you? If simply getting tired were the goal, both options deliver. But they are not the same experience.

When you have to manage technique, strategy, defence, counterattack, movement, and timing – all simultaneously, against a real human being who adapts – there is no comparison. Jiu jitsu is the workout and the fun. Have your cake, eat it too.

6. Regular Deep Sweat Sessions – Included in Your Membership

That soaked gi holds your effort. Your salts. Your stress. Everything you brought in with you. What’s left at the end of a hard session is something lighter, cleaner, sharper. You’ve earned the upgrade.

Upgraded. More intelligent. Harder to rattle. And having a fantastic time getting there.

The body works best when it’s regularly put to work. Jiu jitsu makes sure of it.

7. An Hour Without Your Phone – or Your Problems

No notifications. No interest rates. No irate clients. No background noise from the news. On the mats, there’s almost no room for wandering thoughts – stop for a second and you’ve missed the detail; drift for a moment and your arm is gone.

That full-focus demand is, in a strange way, one of the deepest forms of rest available. An hour of total presence. A real, genuine break from everything else. In 2025, that’s not nothing – it’s almost impossible to find anywhere else.

8. You Walk Around Without Fear

When you fight your mates every night for fun – when violence is something you’ve explored rather than avoided – it shifts something. A basic understanding of how to handle yourself quietly changes the way you move through the world. Head up. Chest out. No need to shrink.

While others hold back from saying what needs to be said, or doing what needs to be done, out of fear of consequences – you’ve become curious about challenge, not scared of it. You’re respectful, measured, and grounded. And you know, in a real way, that you can take care of yourself and the people around you.

That’s not arrogance. That’s confidence. And there’s a real difference.

Ready to experience it for yourself?

These aren’t things you can read your way into. They come from mat time, from community, from the process. If you’ve been thinking about starting – or getting back – now’s the time.
