Get Young People Active – On the Spark Program
Spark is an initiative of Higher Jiu Jitsu with a clear and simple mission ‘Jiu Jitsu for every child’.
The impacts and benefits of getting children involved in learning self defense is well reported for improving mental and physical health as well as overall quality of life.
The cost of learning Jiu Jitsu, like most martial arts and individual activities can be significant. This provides a barrier for families from disadvantaged backgrounds, who may be unemployed/under employed or low-income earners.
Higher Jiu Jitsu is based within the Police and Community Youth Club (PCYC) in Wooloomooloo and shares a commitment to their mission of getting young people active in life. Spark takes this commitment one step further by ensuring that financial barriers to children’s participation is removed.
Recognising as well that the barriers that families face are complex, Higher Jiu Jitsu has formed a partnership with Weave Youth and Community Services to access the use of their bus to provide transport pick up and drop off services for Spark families on Saturday mornings.
