Why the Gi vs No-Gi Debate is a Stupid Argument (And Why You Should Train Both)
At Higher Jiu Jitsu, we get asked about the Gi vs No-Gi debate all the time. And while it’s natural to have preferences, we believe the debate itself is overrated. Instead of focusing on which is “better,” let’s talk about why both are vital parts of a well-rounded Jiu Jitsu journey—and why you should train in both.
The Gi: Control, Strategy, and Precision
There’s no denying the gi has a special place in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. When you put on the kimono, you’re entering a realm of precision. The grips, the ties, the lapels—they all add an extra layer of complexity that requires you to be calculated in every move. The gi teaches you to control not just your opponent’s body but also their posture, movements, and even their breathing.
Training in the gi also helps build strong fundamentals. By working on grips and positioning, you become more adept at controlling your opponent from any position. You learn how to methodically work through techniques and strategies, rather than exploding out of precarious positions, which can translate to a more thoughtful approach when you step onto the no-gi mat.
No-Gi: Speed, Fluidity, and Adaptability
On the other hand, no-gi Jiu Jitsu is a completely different experience. There’s no kimono to grip, and you can’t rely on traditional collar or sleeve holds to control your opponent. In no-gi, everything becomes more slippery, and things happen faster, and you have to constantly adapt to the changing dynamics of the fight.
The speed and fluidity of no-gi training teach you to flow through transitions and sweeps quickly. You develop an increased sense of agility, and your body awareness improves as you learn how to move without the same level of control provided by the gi. It’s a more raw and dynamic form of Jiu Jitsu that is incredibly beneficial for improving your reactions, scrambles, and submission chains.
Why the Debate is Unnecessary
At Higher Jiu Jitsu, we’re not here to tell you that one is better than the other. In fact, we think the Gi vs No-Gi debate is a pointless argument. Both have their advantages, and both are important in becoming a versatile, well-rounded grappler. The truth is, each side offers unique skills that complement each other.
In real-world situations or competition, your grappling should be adaptable. There will be times when you’re fighting in the gi, and there will be times when you’re in no-gi.
Most importantly, base, connection to your partner, and leverage are the constants in both gi and no gi. When you focus on these, your jiu jitsu can progress in any realm.
Thus the best way to approach Jiu Jitsu is to embrace both. They’re not enemies; they’re different tools that make you a more complete martial artist.
Training Both: The Key to Progress
So, why should you train both gi and no-gi? The answer is simple: because they make each other better.
- Gi training will refine your control, grips, and patience, all of which will improve your general game.
- No-gi training will increase your speed, control, and ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment.
Each offers its own set of challenges that will elevate your Jiu Jitsu to the next level. By training both, you’re forced to adjust to different styles of fighting, which makes you more versatile and ready for anything.
Our Philosophy: Train it All
At Higher Jiu Jitsu, our philosophy is all about growth, adaptability, and learning. We believe that training in both gi and no-gi allows you to tap into the full potential of Jiu Jitsu. Rather than getting stuck in a “this or that” mentality, focus on what’s most important: progress.
Whether you’re donning the gi or going bare-skin for no-gi training, the most important thing is that you’re pushing yourself, learning new techniques, and constantly improving.
So, forget the debate. Get on the mat, train hard, and train it all. Your journey in Jiu Jitsu will be richer and more rewarding for it.
